Detroit Public Health offers free preventive health screenings at neighborhood wellness centers

In an effort to tackle health disparities among Detroit residents, the Detroit Health Department, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), is offering free preventive health screenings at seven Neighborhood Wellness Centers.

This initiative provides resources such as blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol screenings, along with ongoing COVID-19 testing. Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo stated, “We are excited to partner with Neighborhood Wellness Centers in our communities throughout the city of Detroit to address public health disparities.”

The launch of these wellness centers represents a strategic approach to meet residents in their communities and bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility. By providing services at locations that formerly served as COVID-19 testing sites, the initiative aims to reach underserved populations and those in need of essential wellness services. As Razo emphasized, the goal is to ensure that Detroiters have equitable access by expanding programs that address the social determinants of health.

The screenings are available without appointments at various centers starting from August 15, 2024. This initiative not only highlights the commitment of the Detroit Health Department to improving health outcomes but also reinforces the importance of addressing racial and ethnic health disparities within these communities.
