Paola Gonzalez, MPAS, PA-C, a 2024 Diversity Award recipient, is making significant strides in addressing healthcare disparities for Spanish-speaking patients. Born in Colombia and raised in New York City, Gonzalez witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by Hispanic communities due to language barriers and limited access to Spanish-speaking providers.
As a bilingual PA practicing breast medical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Gonzalez ensures that language is not an obstacle to high-quality care for her Spanish-speaking patients. She actively mentors healthcare providers and promotes medical Spanish as an essential component of healthcare delivery.
Gonzalez’s efforts extend beyond her clinical practice. As president of PAs for Latino Health, she established the organization’s first pre-PA mentorship program, approved at the inaugural Hispanic Health Summit in 2023. She also serves on various committees and commissions, including the AAPA Commission on the Health of the Public.
“I have a passion for uniting communities through education and communication to break down barriers, and promoting a better healthcare environment for patients of all backgrounds,” Gonzalez states, emphasizing the importance of diversity in healthcare.
