Dr. Eraka Bath, a renowned psychiatrist and health equity expert, is working to address the stark disparities in healthcare access and outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. In a recent interview, Dr. Bath emphasized the need for systemic changes to ensure equal access to quality healthcare for all Americans, regardless of their background.
“We must acknowledge and actively work to dismantle the structural racism that has led to these unacceptable disparities in health outcomes,” Dr. Bath stated. She highlighted the disproportionate impact of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, on communities of color, as well as the higher rates of maternal and infant mortality among Black women.
Dr. Bath called for increased funding for community health centers, improved cultural competency training for healthcare providers, and targeted outreach efforts to build trust between medical institutions and underserved communities. She also emphasized the importance of addressing social determinants of health, such as access to healthy food, safe housing, and quality education.
“Health equity is not just a medical issue; it is a matter of social justice,” Dr. Bath concluded. “We must work together to create a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to live a healthy life.”
